Supermarket rip offs

Started by: erontquay (inactive)

We have all come across "special offers" in the supermarket and thought what a rip off. Todays Mail highlights Muller yoghurt in Asda for the price of 61p, 29, dearer than the original price of 30p Then they sell a ten pack for £4. When the offer ended it went back to 30p each. Now thats a rip off in my book. So if anyone finds an "offer" thats a rip off post it here and let everyone know. Lets fight back

They sem to put a lot of things on offer, but when you look at the grams or millilitres on the container, often the manufacturers have reduced the content.

Warburtons Bread, Fairy Liquid to name but 2.

Visit other stores more often. They (Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's) will soon put their prices down to try to kill off the competition.

Well said EQ. I'd say try and shop local, but nowadays in many cases, even that's a Tesco.

"Muller yoghurt in Asda for the price of 61p, 29, dearer than the original price of 30p."

31p dearer.

Woops It doesnt matter which supermarket people shop at they're all at it. You feel that you need a degree in maths to calculate some of the offers.

Farmers markets, Organic Boxes etc are becoming more popular, as are people choosing to grow their own stuff. This is a step in the right direction, and although expensive the food is often better/fresher. Supermarkets offering two for one on punnets of fruit is ridiculous as a lot gets wasted.

The problem is that the majority of folk are not aware of seasonal produce like they were years ago. People now expect raspberries, strawberries and all the exotic crap everyday of the week.

It is possible to grow your own fruit and veg to supply you and your family all the year round. Obviously not everyone has the space - but there are ways of overcoming this obstacle.

If everyone decided to grow a bit of something the supermarkets would soon sit up and notice.

another 'favourite' trick is the 'bigger pack better value' blag , e.g a 1.5 kg tub of vanish powder costing well over £11 at sainsburys, but if you buy 3 x 500g tubs it would only cost £9.

I often go to supermarkets just before closing. You can buy allsorts from bread, biscuits, pies, sausage rolls - all baked that day absolutely nothing wrong with them.

VG my daughter had a box of organically grown veg delivered every week, she never knew what was going to be delivered but was happy in the knowledge that it was organic. TILL,they started to deliver veg that was obviously past it's sell by. She gave them the boot. PS my onions are in containers going well.

My son went to Morrison's last night and came back with (amongst other things) 'Fuji' apples 4 for £2.50.

They are delicious, pink and twice as big as Gala apples - they are a meal in themselves - and it is a good job given the price.

Anyone know where I can buy a Fuji apple tree?

Erontquay - I'd never heard of the pears either, I agree they do look pretty in their baskets but we won't be buying them again. One or two scare stories on google about the chinese putting reddening agent into the soil to be taken up by the apples...Morrisons

If you buy 2 packs of Andrex toilet rolls at £9 each at Tesco they'll give you 10p off a litre of petrol. So you have to spend £18 to make a "saving" of £6 max

On the subject of toilet rolls - Poundstretcher are selling 18 rolls for 3.99 or 2 packs (36) for £5. Bargain

Golden Wonder pickle onion flavour crisps were 78p for 6 packets in Lidl a couple of weeks ago, saw them in ASDA last week for £2.00; funny thing is the other Golden Wonder flavour were £1.28 for 6 packets.

I think Lidl & Aldi and getting better by the week, the range and quality of their products is excellent.

Tesco and Asda get lost.

Not a pricing issue but this week I have bought 2 different lots of Jersey Royals from different shops, they were pre packed and when I got them home they were both green. Today I went to the Coop intending to buy loose JRs but they too were green. Considering the price of them I'd say that this was one massive rip off. Benni I agree with you about aldi and lidl, there is some nice quality stuff in both shops. Incidentally Aldis Almat stain lift washing powder came out top in "Which test lab" beating Ariel actilift At £3.29 as opposed to £7.59 I'd say that was a good buy.

Veg grower, Pound Stretcher are selling 18 toilet rolls at £3.99 or 36 for a fiver! It would be far more cost effective to buy 20 scourers for a pound from Poundland. They will have the same effect.

Mmmm They are only cheap ones. When I last went to Tescos I bought a pack of 24 Velvet for £7 (2 weeks ago) I used to go for the scented ones, but when you think about it they only get flushed away..

Another supermarket rip-off from Tesco and Morrisons. For the last few years we have bought sliced roast beef (pk 4 slices), last year both Tesco and Morrisons were selling these containing 110g now there is only 100g. They also used to sell them 3 pks for £4, now they are selling them at 2 for £3.

I realise that this may sound tedious but it aggravates me because I am being ripped off, not only has the price increased, but they are also smaller quantity.

DO TESCO THINK WE CAME OVER ON THE ONION BOAT !!!!!

Cripps apples from Tesco, a bag of 4 for 84p, decent sized apples but are bruised (probably why they bagged 'em) they are also extremely sticky even after rinsing - this may be down to the 'bloom' not sure, had to rub them dry to get rid of the stickiness.

Suffice to say I wouldn't bother buying them as 3 out of my 4 were bruised. All the way from Brazil too.

On the upside their own brand biscuits are very cheap 30p per pack ie digestives.

Tesco are offering 'Buy One Get One FREE' on boxes of Pringles.
They are stacked in a large basket, close to the checkouts, with no price displayed.
When they go through the checkout, the price, for ONE box of Pringles, shows £2.48!!!!! So, with one free(?) you're paying £1.24 for one box of Pringles.

B&M sell the same product for 89p and still make a profit.
That shows Tesco as making 28% MORE profit than B&M on that product and around 72% gross profit on the single box price.

Frauds!

Stooo - I often pick up stuff late in the evening. Morrison's is usually the best but also had good stuff from Tesco. Cumberland Sausages for about 20p, half a chicken for 50p, Meat Loaf, sausage meat even spicy wings and ribs. Nothing wrong with them at all - they were cooked the same day, just no-one bought them.

I also buy cheap herbs too 10p a bag etc and bread rolls and loaves.

I think a lot of people are a bit snobbish about going to Aldi to shop, my wife goes & gets most of her shopping in Aldi,Anything she cant get she gets from Asda, Aldi stuff is as good if not better, It's cut her shopping bill down quite a lot, Good fresh fruit & Veg is half the price of Asda,
